Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
We have spoken with many parents and realize that you may only have time to complete a brief activity with your child. If you only have 2 minutes to spare, please consider trying the following:
During mealtimes today, talk about healthy and unhealthy food choices. Discuss how healthy food means it gives your body vitamins and minerals; healthy foods give your body lots of good energy to play and learn! Discuss how unhealthy foods are treats and may taste very sweet or salty (depending on your choice); unhealthy foods may taste delicious, but they don't give your body a lot of good energy. Label the foods on your plate and your child's plate. For example, "We have carrots for snack today. Carrots are a healthy vegetable. Can you think of any other vegetables?" and "We can have a chocolate treat after supper. Chocolate is unhealthy, but it sure tastes delicious! It's nice to have treats sometimes. What are some other treats we enjoy together?" Bon appetit!
Today we will learn about the letter Y. Watch the videos to learn about the letter Y and the sound it makes.
Game Time
Bring your family together to play this fun game! Each person will need a moving piece (i.e., a coin, a toy figurine, an object like an eraser). Roll a dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. As you land on the food item, ask each other:
1) Did you land on a healthy or unhealthy food? Try encouraging and modelling negation concepts (i.e. 'not').
Child: "This ice cream is not healthy."
2) "Do you like _____? Why do/don't you like _____?" Encourage your child to expand their sentence with the word 'because'.
Child: "Yes, I like pizza because it is tasty!"
*note: if you don't own a die, you can go to rolladie.net to roll a die (or 2 dice, if you prefer)
This week in the KLP, we are learning about healthy and unhealthy foods! Kids loving learning through play so this week we are suggesting that you and your child make your very own grocery store at home (hopefully without the line ups)!
Cash register: If you don't have one, you can use a calculator (like the one on your phone) to pretend.
Pretend or real food. Try arranging it on a toy shelf or in baskets so that it looks like a grocery store!
Grocery bags and a toy basket to collect food.
A scanner: We wrapped an old cereal box with tin foil.
Pretend or real debit card or money.
1) SORT (Healthy vs. unhealthy): While setting up your grocery store, try sorting healthy and unhealthy foods with your child. Talk about different food groups (i.e. fruits vs. vegetables). While sorting, try explaining that unhealthy foods (i.e., ice cream) have less nutrients than healthy foods. Be sure to emphasize that it's okay to eat unhealthy foods once in awhile, but that healthy foods give us more energy to run, dance and play because they have more nutrients!
2) MODEL CONCEPTS: This week try modelling quantity (i.e. less, more, few, none, some) concepts. You can try this during meal time or while pretend grocery shopping.
Commenting: "I would like some oranges please." (Make sure your child gives you 'some' and not 'all' the oranges).
Asking: "Do you want more apples or less apples?" If your child isn't sure how to answer, have them show you and then model their expected answer (i.e. "Oh, you want more apples. Here are two more." - while placing them in his/her basket or grocery bag)
