Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
If you only have 2 minutes to spare, please consider trying the following:
During your next meal together with your child, really describe the food you are eating with lots of different words. Be specific. Talk about the different textures, compare those textures with other foods, use those same describing words to describe other things. For example, "It's spaghetti tonight for dinner! My spaghetti is really squishy. What's your spaghetti like? Can you think of any other squishy foods? Macaroni is kind of squishy too. Macaroni and spaghetti are both types of pasta. My belly feels a bit squishy after eating all that pasta!" and "Let's have fruit for dessert tonight. Here's some apple. The red apple is a bit soft and the green apple is really crunchy. Or you could have banana if you want. The banana is squishy just like the pasta!"
Our word this week is "big".
First - make each of the letters in the word. Use playdough, Lego, or write each letter on a scrap of paper.
Next - talk to your child about the name of each letter and the sound each letter makes
(b = /b/, i = "ih", g = /g/ as in go)
Last - help your child to slowly blend (say) the sounds together until they have sounded out the word "big"
Can you think of anything big? What about the Sun? Or Earth? Or God?
What about....dinosaurs! Let's learn a bit about dinosaurs today and talk about comparisons.
Extinct means that something no longer exists. We say that dinosaurs are extinct because they've all died.
This week we are talking about dinosaurs! Dinosaurs lived many, many years ago! They were one of the main animals on Earth for over 150 million years. Dinosaurs were all different sizes. Some of them were larger than a house, but others were smaller than a chicken. Unfortunately, there are no more dinosaurs left on Earth because they are extinct.
The dinosaur song sings about dinosaurs being very big. But there was something really small about those dinosaurs. Can you remember what is a small part of a dinosaur? It's brain! A dinosaur had a large body, but a small brain. As small as a pea!
The song also talks about dinosaur body parts. Can you think of any dinosaur body parts? How about....
sharp teeth
horns
scales
some had feathers
Vocabulary
Norway- a country in Europe
unsuspecting- when you don't know something is going to happen.
gloating- to brag about something you have done. You think you have done an amazing job.
groggy- not fully awake. When you just wake up you might feel a bit groggy.
Have you read Goldilocks yet? Well, now that you read the original version let's try another. This story is called "Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs".
While reading, think about:
Who are the characters in the story?
Why did the dinosaurs make chocolate pudding and leave their door unlocked?
Why did Goldilocks go into the dinosaurs' home?
How do you think Goldilocks felt when she realized that dinosaurs lived there and not bears?
What would you have done if you were Goldilocks?
How did they dinosaurs feel when they came home and Goldilocks was gone? why?
Watch the "Big and Small" music video.
Now, it's your turn to think of some other things to go along with the words in the song. Try to think of something
big / small
fast / slow
up / down
loud / quiet
Pick one of the pairs of words. Draw a picture to go with each of those words. Then, try to write out the name of the picture.
*your child can complete this activity in your home language using the corresponding words for those concepts
Please note: for both of these images, you could discuss different comparisons! For example, for bunny and hippo, we discussed how a bunny is small and a hippo is large, but we also discussed how a bunny is quiet and a hippo can be loud. The same (loud/quiet) comparison could be made with the car and turtle too!
Segmenting Sounds-Watch this video and listen for sounds in words. This helps us with our writing. If you would like some extra practice, print the activity sheet.
