Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
We have spoken with many parents and realize that you may only have time to complete a brief activity with your child. If you only have 2 minutes to spare, please consider trying the following:
Continue to speak about nature with your child. Talk to your child about what plants need to grow (soil, water, sun). Talk about different kinds of plants we have in Canada (grass, Maple trees, daisies, dandelions, shrubs, etc). Do you have any plants in your home? Maybe your child could help you water the plants today. Are you able to go for a neighbourhood walk? Point out any tree roots you might see peeking out of the ground. Teach your child how the roots dig down underground to pull nutrients up from the soil.
As always, this is a talking job, so please complete this activity in your home language.
Word of the Week
This week we will learn the word "DIG".
Using playdough, sticks, pencil crayons or sand try making each letter in the word "dig"
Have your child tell you what sound each letter makes- /d/..."ih"../g/
Now practise saying the sounds a little faster each time so they blend together to make the new word.
What 3 things do seeds need to grow? (soil, water, light)
Why is a seed like a promise? (It is a promise of new life)
How do you plant a seed? (First, you put some soil in a cup or planter. Next, you add some seeds. Then, you cover the seeds with soil. Last, you water the seeds.)
What foods can you think of with seeds? (apples, oranges, avocados, melon, peppers, cucumbers, etc.)
This is a talking job that will help your child learn categorization skills (plants), vocabulary (names of different plants plus describing words), and speaking in long sentences. IF YOU LIKE, PLEASE COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY IN YOUR HOME LANGUAGE.
If you and your family feel comfortable, please go outside (maintaining social distance, of course) and hunt for plants! Follow your child's lead and let them choose 3 plants that they are interested in. Take a picture of the plants. If you are unable or uncomfortable to take your child outside, please let them choose 3 of the plants from the pictures below to complete this activity.
When you get back home/when your child has chosen their 3 plants, help your child to figure out the name of the plant and 2 interesting facts about the plant. Then, help your child to use a long sentence to tell you what they have learned. For example, "This is grass. Grass is green and is a skinny plant," or "These are dandelions. Dandelions are a yellow weed," or "This is a maple tree. A maple tree can grow very large and you can make maple syrup with the sap," or "This is clover. It has green leaves and some people eat it."
Have fun with your budding botanist! (pun intended)
Canada Fleabane
clover
dandelion
grass
ragweed
tulip
Grab your child's favourite stuffed animal to help with this activity. Tell your child that their stuffy (for example, Ted the Bear) wants to play a game. Ted is going to say some sounds. Can you squish them together to guess what the word is?
Remember, their animal friend needs to pronounce the sounds clearly (not the names of the letters) and slowly to help your child recognize each sound in the word.
Try the following nature words: dig (d-ih-g); log (l-aw-g); pot (p-aw-t); sun (s-uh-n); bud (b-uh-d); grass (g-r-a-ss)
