Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
If you only have 2 minutes to spare, please consider trying the following:
Tell your child today you are going to talk about the sun. Ask your child, "Where does the sun live?" (answer: in the sky) Inform your child that the sun is actually really, really far away and is a really big star. Ask your child, "Do you know when the sun comes out?" (answer: during the day!) Talk to your child about the sun's jobs - it gives us light and heat and helps us to know when it is (daytime or nighttime). If you have a bit extra time, talk to your child about our current season (spring) and how, normally, it is a lot sunnier and warmer! This spring has been cold and rainy so far - talk to your child about how we need more sun to warm us up!
A fun way to introduce the new word this week is by using a painting bag. All you need is a ziploc freezer bag, any colour paint, and a Q-tip. If you don't have paint, you can use hair gel, shaving cream, or sand.
Pour a little paint into the freezer bag, then seal the top and smoosh the paint around. Voila, you have your own canvas to write on!
Introduce each letter of the word. Have your child write the letter and tell you the sound it makes. Then, have them blend the sounds together to make our new word "SUN".
Alternatively, you can use some magnetic letters, or write the letters yourself. Cut three small pieces of paper and print 1 letter on each piece of paper (s/u/n).
Scramble up the letters and ask your child to move them around so that they spell the word "sun".
Can you think of other words that have the /s/ sound in them?
Words to know:
orbit: The path that planets take around the sun. All planets travel around the sun.
solar system: the sun is the star in the middle of our solar system and all the 8 planets orbit (travel) around it.
Let's learn all about the Sun! The sun is an enormous star that we get all our energy from.
First, watch this video all about the amazing sun.
Next, tell someone in your family 3 things you learned about the sun. (the sun is centre of the solar system, planets orbit the sun, the sun is really hot, the sun keeps earth warm, the sun helps plants grow, the sun is made of gas, 1 million earths could fit inside the sun, etc.)
Do you know how to stay safe in the sun? Watch the 2 YouTube videos (both are cued to start in the middle of the songs just to make them shorter) and learn some sun safety tips.
When you are done, try to remember 2 things that you can do to stay safe in the sun. Write those 2 things down (your child should be able to "hear" the first sound and maybe the last sound too. You can help them fill in some of the missing sounds). So, for example, if your child says, "Wear sunscreen," they might be able to write "wr sn." Try to encourage your child to leave a finger space between the words. If your child says, "Drink water," they might be able to write "dk wr."
If you like, you can upload a picture of your child's work to the Google classroom.
Extra time? You can try this activity sheet as review on sun safety.
Press play and sing along to some super sunny songs.
