Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
Our letter this week is Qq. When we learn Qq, we discuss how "q" always appears beside "u" and that "qu" make the sound /kw/ as in quack and queen. See if you and your child can think of some words that start with "qu" and the sound /kw/ (e.g., quack, queen, question). *If your child generates a word like "quarter", discuss with them how, yes, the word starts with "q", but only makes a /k/ sound.
Story Time
Oviparous (O-vip-a-rous) is a very long word that means an animal that lays eggs.
Have your child watch this story "Chickens Aren't the Only Ones" by Ruth Heller to learn more about animals that lay eggs.
After watching this video, see if your child can recall any animals that lay eggs.
1) Movement activity - play Simon Says with your child. Take turns being "Simon." The catch is, you and your child have to think of animals that hatch from an egg and tell each other to move that way. Some examples are the following:
Simon says waddle like a duck / crawl like a spider / crawl like a crab (it's a different type of crawl!) / waddle like a penguin / fly like a blue jay / swim like a fish / slither like a snake / scamper like a lizard / stomp like a dinosaur / hop like a frog
2) Charades - have your child think of the names of some animals that hatch from an egg. You and your child can then draw pictures of those animals (1 animal per piece of paper). Help your child also write the animal's name on the paper -sound out the words slowly while you write it down. Then, take turns pulling one of the animals out of a hat. Whoever pulls the picture out has to act out that animal. The other player has to guess which animal it is! To make this game even more challenging, the guesser has to guess the action and the animal e.g., "You're slithering like a snake!" (If your child has trouble acting out Charades, remind them it's just like how the characters played in Frozen 2!)
If you are looking for some extra review and fun have your child watch "First the Egg" and then print and complete the activity sheet "Who lays eggs?"
