High School English Classes: Moving Away From Standard Instruction and Toward Active Student Engagement
A common refrain from members of my recent English departments has often claimed that student engagement is lacking. In a world where thirty-second videos provide instant and repeated dopamine surges, it can be difficult to get the average student to engage and get excited about discussing literature. After nearly twenty years in the classroom, I have compiled a list of single class-period activities to get students involved, on their feet, and enjoying these new approaches to the discussion of literature. Student feedback has consistently stated that the activities are fun and help them to better understand the skills and concepts. These tried and true activities will be both demonstrated and shared to add vitality and depth to the classrooms of current English teachers.
