That’s a wrap for STAGE 2024/25! A portion of our full cast and crew were able to join for the annual STAGE end of year potluck last week to celebrate our year, give out the “paper plate “ awards and give a final goodbye to our amazing Ms. Young.
STAGE held auditions last week for the combined campus fall play, Radium Girls! Over 60 students auditioned (including 14 incoming freshmen!) The play has officially been cast and we have a cast of 32 and a crew of 45! Very exciting. We look forward to next fall and hope you can join us for performances November 14-16 at 529 Main Street!
Several East IB Music Juniors put together an end of year “Battle of Thy Bands” at 529 Main Street for two days at lunch in June for their IB Music Portfolio, the Collaborative Contemporary Music Maker Project. Despite the absence of the senior class, students formed 11 bands with about 30 students from East & West participating. Teacher judges chose winners for “Best Overall Band”, “Best Stage Presence” (start at 4:54), and “Best Theme” with winners receiving $50, $25 & $25 to Charlie’s Music, respectively.
The East Guitar club also covered several commercial themes which brought laughter to the room and Sam Armitage once again proved the worth of a trusty bass player as he participated in an impressive seven different bands! Much fun was had by all.
IB Theatre - Botsford & Young
The IB Theatre Juniors and Seniors from both campuses had an INCREDIBLE Performance showcase on Thursday, April 10th as part of STURGIS ARTS WEEK 2025! The evening was filled with an array of work from the two year course, everything from solo performances to collaborative projects to staged readings and films were presented. It was a truly magical evening!
STAGE - Botsford & D’Innocenzo
STAGE East and West performed the FIRST ever Student Directed Scene Showcase! It was a massive success on Saturday April 12th at 529- the conclusion of STURGIS ARTS WEEK 2025! Scenes ranged from absurd to comedic to dramatic and everything in between. Audience gave rave reviews! We look forward to bringing it back next year.
IB Art - East & West
Our talented and brave artists put themselves out there and competed in the coveted wall space for the High School "Beginnings" Exhibit sponsored by Cape Cod Art Center. IB Art Students from both East and West Campus’ were featured, with three top winners chosen from each campus. The exhibition used to be in person, however since COVID the Exhibition has remained virtual in order for a longer exposure period.
Finally, congratulations to Simone Sader who received the $1500 Karol Wyckoff Scholarship for an outstanding student going on to pursue the Visual Arts in college next year.
EAST: Winners: Capri Faranetta, Audryn Dubois and Larsen Wake
WEST Winners: Emi Zavarin, Melanie Ineson, and Jayden Bacosa
In the spring SMS was very busy - we had (at least) one big event per week! First, was the All Cape Jazz Festival. This was an incredible experience. For two days (Friday and Saturday), auditioned bands practiced and held workshops in Sturgis spaces.
On Saturday, jazz bands from all over the Cape (Falmouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Nauset, and Sturgis) came to Sturgis to share their work with each other at 529 Main. Workshops from our own Joe Magnant, and local musician and educator, Ryder Corey, were presented in the morning. In the afternoon, these groups played for each other, followed by the auditioned bands (one lead by our own Bart Weisman). It was an eye-opening experience that inspired a number of our students, and it was well-received by music educators around the Cape.
Next was our IB Music Senior Recital at the Guyer Art Barn. Students shared one of their favorite performances from two years in the course with their parents, friends, teachers, and family. This year East and West split because of the number of students involved in both, and as a result the event felt even more intimate. There were tears reflecting the parting emotions at both events.
Then, a group of seniors from East were selected to perform at the All-State Massachusetts Music Educators Conference in Worcester, MA. As well, a sophomore cellist from Sturgis West (Annabel Battin) was selected to participate in the Orchestra. It was a tremendous honor for these students to perform. They were all intimidated by the honor bestowed upon them, but very much enjoyed getting to know fellow composers and contemporary performers from across the state. They literally exchanged business cards!
Finally, as part of Arts Week, students performed in our annual Spring Music Concert at 529 Main Street. Students had a lot of fun making their final ensemble presentations to the Sturgis community. Highlights included a Dave Matthews Band cover from Guitar Club, a live presentation of a piece presented virtually by the Sturgis Singers during covid, audience participation on “Thunderstruck” from the Sturgis Strings, a dramatic piece narrating “the Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe by the Concert Band (6:59), and so much more! It was a wonderful occasion.
47 IB music students from East and West took a trip to Boston during the first week of March to visit the Museum of Fine Arts (to check out the Ancient Instruments Exhibit and gain inspiration for their IB music portfolio which includes “music for other arts”), the Boston Symphony Orchestra (where they were able to meet Gabriela Ortiz, the composer of contemporary Feminist orchestral work “Revolucion diamantina”), visit Guitar Center and then see Joe Bonamassa (blues guitar legend who once played with B.B. King). What an awesome day!
Congratulations to young artist, Ava Murdock, grade 12, who received a Silver Key Award in this year's Regional Scholastics Art & Writing Awards. Approximately 10–15% of all regional submissions are recognized with Silver Key placement.
Ava is a shy modest artist who refrains from discussing her work in public, however she gave me the OK to share this awesome news!

In December we held our Winter Concerts at 529 Main Street. It was our best turnout we have ever had for the events, with at least 200 students participating from East and West!
There were many notable moments throughout the two shows. In the East show, the guitar club was highlighted since it was their first time participating in the Winter Concert. Other favorites were the string ensemble which has grown considerably in size the last two years, and the Sturgis Singers, which entertained in some fun cosplay since they sang a song from the Trolls film.
As well, music students participated in the local Southeast District and All Cape Music Educator Festivals. They had a blast at New Bedford and Barnstable High School.
In December STAGE produced their One Act plays at 529 Main Street! East presented The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter, a comedy about a troupe of actors fumbling their way through a serious melodrama, and West presented Sideways Stories from the Wayside School, an absurdist family friendly show about the antics of a third grade classroom!
