The East and West IB music seniors put on their senior recital on 3/24 at the Guyer Barn to celebrate the completion of their IB assessments! The students chose a dark and stormy theme as they felt that the last two years were particularly challenging for their class (and the world). The finale song was “Sunday Bloody Sunday” by U2 which is about war and injustice. The students did a fantastic job and were excited to share their music with friends and family.
The Spring Concert also took place on 4/13 at 529 Main. It was wonderful to hear the seniors again as well as many other ensemble performances from our talented students. There were standout performances including a new brass ensemble, a revived a cappella group, accordion, solo performances, and a finale of “Make Your Own Kind of Music” by Mama Cass Elliot. STAGE West performed beautifully at the State Festival competition this year with their production of Shuddersome: Tales of Poe, and they ADVANCED to the STATE REGIONALS round for the 4th year in a row. This was the first live, on-stage, maskless performance in over 2 years! The cast and crew worked incredibly hard to continue to develop the show since its community performances and the work paid off.
The judges noted: "The Production of Shuddersome will advance because of strong technical elements and an ensemble that established and enhanced the world of the show, as well as confident, stirring storytelling." In addition several students won awards for Set Design, Costume Design, Hair/Makeup Design and Acting Excellence.
The winds have stopped blowing. The Greek army needs to sail to Troy. When the goddess Artemis demands that you kill your daughter to set the ships on their way, what do you do? Do you choose your family or the country that you rule? Iphigenia in Aulis is a story about who is in charge of our fate and what it means to try and take the reins.
This Fall, the STAGE Production of The Laramie Project opened at Cape Cod Community College. The students worked incredibly hard to bring this intense and provocative story to life. The Laramie Project tells the story of the tragic death of gay university student Matthew Shepard in 1997 in Laramie, Wyoming. This event brought national attention to anti-gay hate crimes in the United States and was significant to the movement promoting gay rights in this country. The members of Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie to interview residents of the community and their relationship to the event. This play depicts those real people, using their words as text, in a Documentary Theater production that STAGE presented with the intention of bringing audiences awareness and hope for the future. It was an incredible step back into live theatre this year.
One of the first things visible at the Main street entrance is a large-scale narrative mural that depicts scenes of Cape Cod life with historical references to William Sturgis and embedded with our IB for All mission and way of life. Ellen Murray, Class of 2022, created this mural as her CAS project, persevering through the many challenges and interruptions brought about by COVID pandemic.
The mural was made with the intention of encapsulating the distinct qualities of Sturgis that makes our school so memorable and life changing for each student. This process has been exceptionally unique because Ellen has been able to grow her leadership and initiative skills. Since September 2019, the Art Club has corresponded with administration to approve the mural plan, has collaborated with Mrs. Abel in creating the design and fulfilling their vision, and has led creative underclassmen in sketching and painting. Ellen has documented the mural’s evolution throughout the past two and a half years, and has found that it has been incredibly rewarding to see the manifestation of everyone’s hard work come to fruition. Completing the mural has taken a community, with a special note of appreciation to the contributions of Mrs Abel, Olivia Solomon and Kathryn Cole (pictured below).

Benjamin Tardiff has received Honorable Mention for his work submitted to the Massachusetts Educational Theatre Guild's High School Monologue Writing Contest. His piece, titled "The Morality of the Consumption of a Fellow Human, as Explained by a Very, Very Hungry Man" is, true to Ben's form, witty and irreverent and quite funny!
Ben started the Creative Writing Club this year and has been a strong and determined leader there. He has taken advantage of many similar writing projects and opportunities, always open to putting his work out there for feedback and trying something new.
