The Sturgis Charter Public School sophomores had the opportunity of attending a talk by state Senator Susan Moran on the housing crisis on Cape Cod as well about civic engagement on Thurs., April 13.
The history departments at both campuses have worked diligently over the past couple of years to implement a civics project for all sophomores adhering to a recently enacted state law. This year, a petition to fund and build more affordable housing on Cape Cod created by Sturgis West History II students, Gianna Barrows, Olivia Canales, and Daniel Carafoli got the attention of state Senator Moran, who asked to speak to our sophomore classes at both campuses.
For the 10th grade civics project, students choose an issue that affects their global, national, state, or local community. They research the issue and figure out what the government's policy is on that issue. They then research what their representative at that level of government is doing or not doing about the issue. They then create a civics action plan addressing certain questions. The next steps include reaching out to their representative(s) about the issue and then taking an additional civic action step. This could include attending a meeting on the issue, creating a presentation raising awareness, canvassing about the issue, etc.
Senator Moran spoke to the students about some of the initiatives she has led and emphasized on the importance of getting involved on a local level starting at a young age. She took several questions from students and heard several of their proposals. A very special thanks to Senator Moran for taking the time out of her busy schedule to meet with Sturgis students. It was a very fruitful morning which we are sure students will learn from and remember for years to come.
