This May, The East and West EPLC and DEIB joined forces to offer a unique presentation for faculty and staff. Teachers and faculty were invited to join us and Multi Language Learner students for a presentation on Immigration and its impact on Students and Families.
At Sturgis West, 10th Grade students Nicole Rupic and Maria Herrera presented their impressive Civics Project on Immigration and its Impact on Children at the border. Maria and Nicole also shared personal experiences from their own lives as the children of immigrants themselves.
The presentation was organized and led by Spanish teacher and DEIB Assistant Coordinator, Melissa Rais with the support of Alyssa, McClory Timoh, MLD teacher and Jessica Lynch DEIB Coordinator.
At Sturgis East, student panelists Juan Gomez, Laura Naurath, Antonian Perry, Srijan Rijal, Fiona Huang shared similar experiences as children of immigrants or immigrants themselves.
They were joined by West students Nicole Rupic and Maria Herrera once more. Teachers listened and asked questions about the students’ migration journeys, experiences and lives at Sturgis and how our school has positively supported them during their high school years.
MLD teacher Iona Masil led the panel at Sturgis East. We hope to make this event a yearly experience for our teachers, staff and students of immigrant families.
