Sturgis East 2022 grad, Grace Wilde and current East seniors, Shannon Keating, Emma Marczak, Schuyler McMahon, Laura Naurath, Libby Seward and Abby Youssef, have published a project (done last spring) in the medical journal, Pediatric Research. The students took part in a Science for Kids project: students chose a paper the journal published and created a project to communicate the research to students their age. Students learned about medical studies and scientific writing, and they met (virtually) with two scientists who authored the paper. Here's a link to the published project at the journal website.

West StuGov hosted our annual New Student Orientation on Saturday Aug 20th for all incoming students. A total of 77 new students were led on a series of ice-breakers, Q & A sessions, and team-building activities by 20 current West students. The goal is to help ease that "First Day at a new school" nervousness and anxiety frequently felt by incoming students. The activity also reinforces that our current students have a responsibility to welcome, assist and lead our new students as they join our community. The event was a huge success due to the efforts of our StuGov student leaders who planned and ran the entire event! At the end of the events, everyone celebrated with a pizza lunch!
The Sturgis Music Society organized an ice cream social the second week of school to 1) create an inclusive SMS environment which encourages vertical mentoring & cross collaboration among all of the various music ensembles & clubs, 2) to attract new students, 3) to meet and greet the music ensemble directors & SMS leaders, and 4) to inform students about when various music clubs meet. There was a great turnout and we had just enough ice cream!

School counselors had a busy start to the school year. The annual Sturgis College Application Boot Camp took place August 23rd at the East Campus. School counselors lead workshops for rising Seniors to get a head start on their college applications. Workshops included the college essay, organizing Senior year, exploring colleges, and starting the Common Application. All rising Seniors meet with their School Counselor during Spring of their Junior year. Counselors will continue to work closely with Seniors to prepare them for a smooth transition from Sturgis to their post-secondary vendevers.
After such a turbulent freshman year in Biology with limited access to labs, our SL1 and HL1 Biology students are making up for lost time! We’ve started the year with microscope work: use of the microscopes, plenty of practice time, and sketches of prepared mammalian cell slides and the students’ own cheek cells. It is clear that the students are thrilled to dig into hands-on work!
