Sgraffito

The main idea behind this was discovering that "happy place." When I saw the cloud shape in my slab, I knew that was what I needed to go off of.

This was originally a sketch with graphite on paper, then translated onto scratchboard (left), and finally carved into a clay slab (right).

I was partially inspired by works I have seen before—of a style I cannot remember—where in a two-tone piece, a large object is used to 'flip' the tone.
