Duck Stamp

Under the Lights

Colored pencil, marker, gel pen

9"x12"

I wanted to try and demonstrate the grace of birds as they glide through the air. I also wanted to improve my landscapes, so I decided to combine the two.

This piece was made with multiple layers of markers, with colored pencil and gel pen used on top to add depth and show lighting.

There were many drafts. The initial idea was to have a goose in a park setting, and then it evolved to include the northern lights. Then I decided that, to be completely honest, it would be much easier to draw these birds in flight. So then I finally combined all these ideas—the northern lights and flying birds over a landscape—to make this piece.
