For our video we decided to implement a bunch of different cuts of our machine and then put them together so we can have a clean final product. We made sure to put all of our mini video cuts in order of the way we wanted our machine to work.
This was my first project in the San Marin S.T.E.M. program for my Freshman year. Two other students and I were told to make a Rube Goldberg machine with a theme and a simple end goal. We had a minute to brain storm as many theme ideas as possible, at the end of the minute we narrowed it down to one option. Our theme was Sponge-bob, we then thought of what our simple problem we would be solving was going to be. We needed to go with our theme of sponge-bob so we finally decided on getting the formula back from plankton and smashing him with a heavy weight. We had to incorporate ten different steps in our Rube Goldberg machines along with five simple machines. We had a total of around three and a half weeks to compete our project.
On one of the first days we were supposed to make a blueprint of what we wanted our project to look like. We had to keep in mind all of the simple machines and steps that we needed. We started off with a tube that dropped two balls onto our first incline plane which then led to the second. We then wanted to have a screw that would go on the front side of our board and curve around two full times before it got spit out onto our lever. Our lever would be sitting with one side up that would be facing the exit of the screw until the marbles got dropped onto it, which would cause it to switch which end was up like a seesaw. It would then go down a tube behind Squidward which would then lead to another pipe that would look like it would be coming out of our Squidward's clarinet. Then the two marbles would brake off onto two different paths. The first marble would go down a straight pipe which would lead to a wheel and axle with a weight on it which would cause the weight to fall. The second marble would then go down the bottom path and lead to our playdough Plankton. The weight will finally drop to smash Plankton. Throughout the project we had to change a lot of our ideas so that our board would finally come together and work.
