This project we learned about a type of homeostasis and did research to find out how to test for it and than ran those tests to find the results.
For this project we were supposed to pick one single type of homeostasis that our body does. My group decided to do Glucose. Glucose Homeostasis is the balance of insulin and glucagon to maintain blood glucose. These levels are mainly tracked and found through the blood. So as we were researching how to track our glucose levels we found that the best way to do it was by pricking your finger and then using a glucose tester to find our glucose levels. So to see if our glucose levels changed with the addition of sugar we had two people rink 1/4 cups of orange juice. This would boost the others glucose levels while the control people would stay roughly the same because they are not changing anything with their sugar intakes. So after we took our original levels the two people drank their juice and then waited 15 minutes to see what there levels would be, finally they took their levels one last time after another 15 minutes. Then we would compare the data.
Vocabulary:
Homeostasis: The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
Control Group: A scientific control is an experiment or observation designed to minimize the effects of variables other than the independent variable.
Independent Variable: A variable whose variation does not depend on that of another.
Dependent Variable: A variable whose value depends on that of another.
Glucose: The main type of sugar in the blood and is the major source of energy for the body's cells.
