This class is dedicated to learning about game mechanics and dynamics.
In this class, we learn about all the different aspects of a game that make it a game, with a prominent reoccurring topic of the MDA framework, meaning the mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics of a game. Board games are a perfect example to use to learn about the MDA framework, which is exactly what we focus on in the briefs in this class.
This trimester, I have gone from simply introducing modifications to an already existing board game (for my group, it was Klaus Teuber's 1995 board game Settlers of Catan) and then testing those modifications to see if they would land, to creating an entire board game from the ground up, from creating a game design document to document everything about it to creating a real playable version of the board game for playtesting.
