Lecture Notes
Judith Butler argued that sex and gender are separate, and that gender identity is developed, not assigned. E.g. Not all women end up conforming to women's normalities in society such as wearing pink and playing with Barbies.
Gay and transgender media is the minority of media in society.
Dembroff's idea about gender is that we are not born into a gender—we shape our gender, though we are born into a sex.
Some examples of how gender norms influence our behaviour includes:
Only playing with toys for boys;
Not crying because "men don't cry" (stoicism);
Gender norms change throughout time, such as back in Victorian times when men wore pink and women wore blue.
Queer Theory (I assume) is the discussion of those whose gender/sexuality falls outside of the established social normalities, and their representation.
Afrofuturism covers the African diaspora culture (related: African ancestry) combined with themes of science fiction and technology. Example in music: Let Me Be Great by Sampa The Great
