Media Interpretations
What is an example of a media text that is purposefully left up to interpretation?
In the conclusion of American Psycho (2000), Patrick Bateman phones his lawyer after concluding a killing spree, telling his lawyer about everyone that he has killed and how he killed each one of them. The next morning, after arriving at a restaurant for his reservation with his co-workers, he finds that everything is as if nothing happened at all; his lawyer doesn't believe that he killed his former co-worker Paul Allen for even believes he is Patrick Bateman, and everybody is acting as if it's business as usual. This plot point isn't explained in the movie and it's left up to fan interpretation as to why his name was clear.
What is an example of a media text that has been misinterpreted?
The movie adaptation of the Starship Troopers Book is often misinterpreted as a celebration of militarism and fascism, or as just a big dumb bug hunt movie. However the film actually takes a satirical approach with the topic of fascism almost to a cartoony level, where they dress up a character in a uniform blatantly resembling those the Nazi SS Officer uniforms.
Why is it important for media creators to consider how audiences will interpret the meaning of their creative work?
Media Creators will wish the Audiences to understand the meaning of their creative work but sometimes audiences will misinterpret the meaning from their work either positively or negatively. Its communicate by influences, by reaching our deep understanding of the world.
