Readathon

*** NEWSFLASH!  READATHON UPDATE (6 November) ***

The PTA Committee has been blown away by the school community's enthusiasm for the Readathon.  At last count, our little bookworms have raised a staggering £7,625 for school funds!  Thank you to the children for reading so voraciously, to parents, friends and family for sponsoring so generously and to teachers for their enthusiasm and support during this fundraising initiative.

This money raised will fund so many of the core items the PTA supports the school with.  Thank you so much!

Congratulations to the classes who raised the most (the top three were so close we thought they deserved a class party!), to the class who read the most books, and to the bookmark winners.  Well deserved and well done!

A wholehearted thanks to Southfields mum Daphne, creator of the immensely popular Illumicrate book subscription service and brand new children's book subscription service Cureadosity, for sponsoring our bookmark prizes for Reception, Y1 and Y2.  Read on for a little more information about this service...

"Cureadosity is the uncomplicated picture book subscription box for children aged between 2 and 7. Each Cureadosity box includes 3 specially pre-selected picture books, a mix of hardback and paperback new releases. You can choose from monthly, bi-monthly, and quarterly to suit your family’s needs.

It was founded by Daphne & Alex, a husband and wife team keen to find interesting and representative books for their daughter. We’re parents, and we know the challenges of choosing books for our little ones! We aim to bring our youngsters a diverse range of stories and to keep reading time a fun and enjoyable experience (for them and you!).

We have great relationships with book publishers, meaning we select books ahead of general release from a large pool of upcoming children’s picture books, which have been enjoyed by parents and kids alike."

Never has this escapism been more important so we are inviting all the children at St Michael’s to begin a week-long adventure in books and help raise money for the PTA.

For the first time, we are holding a sponsored readathon and would love everyone to get involved reading and enjoying as many books as possible.

From Friday 16th October to Friday 23nd October, we would like the children to record all the books they read or enjoy over the course of the week by informing their class teacher.

These will be added to a class chart updated every day.

A sponsorship form will be sent out in the children’s bookbags this Thursday, please consider asking family and friends to support your child’s efforts by sponsoring them. This could be a fixed amount for taking part or pence per minute spent enjoying a book or a set sum per book read.

The children are invited to get creative too and design their own bookmark. This can be anything they like; a favourite literary character, a book-related image or even just a great pattern. Let imagination run wild!

Finally, we are also going to give the children a chance to do a one-off book swap at school. Books for swapping must be in school on Thursday 15th October so they can be exchanged the following week.

There will be prizes for: the class which reads the most books in a week, the class which raises the most money over the course of the readathon and an individual prize in each year group for the best bookmark design, as judged by Mrs Grant. Winners will be announced the week after half-term.

Bookmarks must be handed in by Friday 23rd October with the child’s name and class attached.

Please could all sponsorship money be submitted through the online platform Ticket Tailor with the child’s name and class details included by the end of half-term. The link is here.

Yours sincerely,

The PTA team

We received this wonderful letter from the authors of Supertato to launch our Readathon!

St Michael's pupils adore their books and we hope this fundraiser inspires them even further
