Both the higher and standard courses aim to help you understand current developments in the fast-moving field of biological sciences and their relevance to everyday life e.g. genetic engineering, reproductive technology, neurobiology, health and disease. The courses include a wide range of topics covering the major areas of biology with a strong emphasis on application of understanding. Practical work and problem solving are used extensively to help you understand the main concepts. Both HL and SL courses will help you develop skills that can be useful in a wide variety of contexts.
The Higher Level course is designed to be suitable for anyone with a strong interest in biology and to provide a good basis for those needing Biology for their studies after leaving school. The Standard Level course is designed to be suitable for scientists who have a natural interest in Biology.
The external examinations at the end of the course provide 80% of the final grade.
Internal Assessment: the other 20% is based on internal assessment of one practical investigation. This will be carried out in the autumn term of year 13.
