What is the EE?
The Extended Essay is a 4000 word essay resulting from independent research and study undertaken by the student. Students select their own topic and create a research question, and complete roughly 40 hours of research and writing to produce their essay. At three points, students complete reflections on their experience, thinking about their approach and how they have managed any difficulties encountered. They are supported throughout the process by their supervisor.
When do students complete the EE?
Proposals are submitted in February of year 12, with supervisors assigned shortly after. The majority of the writing is undertaken in the summer between year 12 and 13, with a draft submitted in September for supervisor feedback. The deadline for final submission is in late November, with the final reflection meeting scheduled for December.
The EE is an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of a topic or subject that interests them, and can be excellent preparation for higher education. Students craft their own line of inquiry, and have to become both reflective and adaptive as they work through the process to come to their final conclusion. The aim of the EE is to grow as a thinker, and to practise the IB skills acquired in their chosen subjects.
