In the language A: literature course, students will reflect on the power of literature across cultures and throughout history. This course will take into consideration factors related to production and reception of literature, such as context and literary tradition, creativity, language and effect, performative and transformative potential of literary creation and response.
Students will develop close analysis, interpretation and critical reading of literary texts in a number of forms and from different times and places. Students will also be engaged in creative reading production, which will help them to shape awareness of how texts influence readers and how readers open up the possibilities of texts.
STANDARD LEVEL
70 % - External Assessment (3 Hours)
Paper 1: Guided literary analysis (1 hour 15 minutes) (35%)
Analysis of one of two extracts from two different literary forms, each accompanied by a question. (20 marks)
Paper 2: Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes) (35%)
Students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course, in response to one of four questions. (30 marks)
30 % - INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
(Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB)
Individual oral (15 minutes)
Students examine how a global issues in presented through content and form in an extract from one work written originally in the language studied and one from a work studied in translation. (40 marks)
HIGHER LEVEL
70% - External Assessment (4 Hours)
Paper 1: Guided textual analysis (2 hours 15 minutes) (35%)
Analysis of two extracts from two different literary forms, each accompanied by a question. (40 marks)
Paper 2: Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes) (25%)
Students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course, in response to one of four questions. (30 marks)
Higher Level Essay (1200-1500 words) (20%)
Essay on one literary text or work studied during the course. (20 marks)
