Standard Level:
Conflict and Displacement

Higher Level:
Standard Level content above, plus two European regional studies:
The Russian Revolution, 1855–1924
Democracy, authoritarianism and conflict in Spain, c.1920–2020
Both Standard Level and Higher Level students complete the following assessments:
Paper 1: Source-based examination – students use historical sources and their own knowledge to respond to an overarching inquiry question. They are assessed on their understanding of sources, analysis of source context and examination of different historical perspectives. (SL – 30%, HL – 20%)
Paper 2: Concepts and thematic study – Section A requires students to analyse a historical concept using an example from their study. In Section B, students complete a short-response question and an essay based on their thematic study of Authoritarian Rule. (SL – 40%, HL – 25%)
Internal Assessment: Historical Investigation – students conduct an independent historical investigation into a topic of their choice. They formulate an inquiry question, select and analyse sources, and use evidence to construct a historical response. (SL – 30%, HL – 20%)
Higher Level students also sit an additional examination:
Paper 3: European History – students answer two essay questions, one from each of the two European regional studies they have studied. Questions require students to evaluate historical arguments and perspectives using detailed historical knowledge. (HL – 35%).

Both Standard Level and Higher Level students complete the following final assessments:
Paper 1: Source-based paper which asks you to analyse 4 different sources (SL - 30% HL - 20%)
Paper 2: Essay-based paper where you are asked to answer two essay questions from two different topics (SL - 45% HL - 25%)
Internal Assessment: Students are required to conduct a independent historical investigation into a topic of their choice (SL - 25% HL - 20%)
Higher Level students then sit a additional exam:
Paper 3: Essay-based paper where you are asked to answer three essay questions from two different topics (HL - 35%)
