We aim to ensure that students embark on the programme with the best opportunity of being successful in the course. For this reasons we consider the ability of individual students to meet the demands of the different parts of the IB programme, including their chosen subjects.
Students beginning the IB programmes at St. Julian’s should have achieved at least a grade 4/C in six or more GCSE subjects (to obtain equivalência in the Portuguese education system). Additionally, we require a grade 4/C in English Language (first or second) and Mathematics.
Additionally, the following recommendations guide the process of selecting subjects:
For subjects chosen at Higher Level, it is recommended that students have a minimum grade of 6/B at GCSE.
For subjects chosen at Standard Level, it is recommended that students have a minimum grade of 4/C at GCSE.
For Mathematics Higher Level it is recommended that students have at least an 8 in Mathematics at GCSE.
If the subject was available, but was not studied at GCSE, students are expected to demonstrate their interest, understanding and aptitude for the subject when choosing it for IB. This will be discussed with the relevant Head of Department before confirmation of enrolment in the subject.
If a subject was not available at GCSE the following recommendations are suggested:
Economics - 6/B in English for HL
Psychology - 6/B in English for HL
Environmental Systems and Societies - 6/B in Biology / Geography / Double Award Science for HL
There is no GCSE requirement for Ab Initio languages.
Each student will be considered individually and supported to ensure they choose the best combination of subjects. It is important for students to select subjects they are both interested in and likely to excel in.
We aid all students in making the most appropriate choices after (I)GCSE. A range of teachers including the Student Futures Team and Secondary Leadership Team will support students in exploring the best next step. In order to make this possible all Year 11 students will have individual conversations with an appointed teacher to give them the opportunity to discuss their options with an experienced member of staff who will support and counsel them through the process.
