The Language A: language and literature course aims at providing students with a wide experience of reading literary and non-literary texts in a variety of media.
The course aims at developing the capacity to develop a critical reading of different communicative acts. Students will access a wide range of literary forms and textual types, and will analyse the nature of language and the ways in which it has an impact on and is influenced by identity and culture.
Approaches to study will include secondary reading from literary theory, sociolinguistics, media studies and critical discourse analysis, among others.
STANDARD LEVEL
70 % - External Assessment (3 Hours)
Paper 1: Guided textual analysis (1 hour 15 minutes) - 35%
Analysis of one of two non-literary extracts, from two different text types, each accompanied by a question. (20 marks)
Paper 2: Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes) - 35%
Students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course, in response to one of four questions. (30 marks)
30 % - INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
(Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB)
Individual oral (15 minutes)
Students examine how a global issue in presented through content and form in two texts (literary and non-literary). (40 marks)
HIGHER LEVEL
80% - External Assessment (4 Hours)
Paper 1: Guided textual analysis (2 hours 15 minutes) - 35%
Analysis of two non-literary passages, from two different text types, each accompanied by a question. (40 marks)
Paper 2: Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes) - 25%
Students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course, in response to one of four questions. (30 marks)
Higher Level Essay (1200-1500 words) - 20%
Essay on one non-literary text or a collection of non-literary texts by one same author, or a literary text or work studied during the course. (20 marks)
20% - Internal Assessment
(Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB)
