St Julian’s follows the Academic Honesty Policy of the IBO. We understand that it is our responsibility as teachers to ensure that our students are taught how to research efficiently and with due attention to the careful attribution of the sources they have used to produce their work. We recognize that different subjects within the IB Diploma programme follow different research methodologies and teachers of those subjects school their students in how best to embark on valid and interesting research. As learners in the 21st century, we expect our students to have a clear idea of how best to use focused research as one way (among many) to address the academic challenges presented by IB assessment tasks. We expect this research to be carried out with intelligence and judgment, we expect the research to be carefully validated and we will ensure that course-work of any kind is carefully checked so that it is an honest reflection of the standard each student has attained.
It is important that all students and parents are fully aware that work which is suspected of any form of malpractice will be rejected by the school and sanctions may be put in place. The school reserves the right to have the work of any student checked by outside agencies such as turnitin.com, to which we subscribe. An agency like this will check the work for any evidence of copying or unattributed borrowings from any source. We spend a great deal of time at St Julian’s educating our students on research and how to pursue it, especially with the Extended Essay. Our teachers are always ready to help clarify any concerns regarding academic honesty with any of our students. There is no excuse for dishonest approaches to course-work or research and any student who ignores these clear protocols will be in danger of failing the IB Diploma programme.
St Julian’s expects parents to support their son/daughter in maintaining academically honest behaviour.
