Religion 6

The sixth grade religion curriculum is an examination of how scripture and tradition reveal God to His people. There is especially an emphasis on revelation through the Old Testament, including the appropriate method to read the Bible. Students will examine the initial plot for content and then consider what the story may have meant to people of that time. Finally students will be encouraged to apply the lesson of the story to themselves, always with the clear distinction between truth and fact. This course will take students from Genesis and the creation, examining how God reworks His creation whenever humankind fails to recognize him. God continually provides those leaders needed at the time, including Abraham, Jacob, the Judges, the Kings of Israel, and the Prophets. There will be a serious look at how the Old Testament prefigures so much of what we recognize in the New Testament and the Church today. Students will also be lead through preparations for celebrating of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. Devotions such as the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and classroom prayer and song will be used to guide the students into different prayer experiences. In addition, classroom prayer and discussion experiences will be used to encourage students to consider the vocation options provided for each of them.  As one of the main expectations at St. Joseph's School, students will be directed to become active members of the school, parish, and community at large, taking the generosity expressed in the Old Testament into their daily life experiences.
