The goal of Health Education is to help students adopt and maintain healthy behaviors. Health Education contributes directly to a student's ability to successfully practice behaviors that protect and promote health while avoiding or reducing health risks.
Educator roles in contributing to the Health Education goal include:
Teaching functional health information (essential concepts)
Helping students determine personal values that support healthy behaviors
Helping students develop group norms that value a healthy lifestyle
Helping students develop the essential skills necessary to adopt, practice, and maintain health-enhancing behaviors

In-Class Activities:
On August 22nd, we will learn more about analyzing health influences and complete a Health Influence worksheet, which is due at the end of class that day.
Students will select one health influence to analyze and create a poster that represents how this influence changes the way they feel, think, and act. We will continue working on these posters in class on Monday, August 25th, and they are due on Wednesday, August 27th. A video resource for this assignment has been posted in Google Classroom.
Upcoming Topic:
We will begin learning about goal setting, specifically focusing on SMART goals. A task related to this topic will be assigned in Google Classroom and is due at the beginning of class on September 3rd.

1. Health Triangle Questionnaire (In-Class): Due: September 5, 2025
2. Health Street Sign Artwork: For this assignment, students will design a creative street sign that promotes a positive trait related to the Health Triangle (physical, mental/emotional, or social health). The sign should feature a positive message that encourages individuals to make healthy choices aimed at improving that specific area of their health. We will start working on the street sign in class. There are a few examples available on Google Classroom. Assessment Grade Due: September 12, 2025
3. Empathy Treasure Chest: This is also an in-class assignment scheduled for September 12, 2025.
This week, we will explore the topics of mental health and ways to promote healthier habits. On Friday, September 12, we will begin our unit on Empathy.

Assignments and Deadlines:
1. Empathy Treasure Chest (In-Class): Due September 12, 2025.
2. On Monday (15th), we will focus on positive self-talk, bullying, and cyberbullying. During class, students will work on incorporating positive self-talk into their daily routines and identifying ways to transform negative thoughts into positive expressions.
3. Students will begin creating a "Making Your Voice Count" quilt that features words of encouragement to help combat bullying. Making your voice count quilt examples will be posted on Google Classroom. The quilt section is due on Friday, September 19, 2025 (project grade).
4. Students will have a culminating topic assignment in class on Friday, September 19, 2025, to reinforce this week's topics.

On Friday, students will receive a Nutrition Choice Board project that is due on Monday, February 9th. They will have the option to select from various nutrition-related activities on the choice board, which together total 100 points. Students must submit the required documentation for each activity. I will provide students with a hard copy of the project to complete, and a reference copy will be available on Google Classroom starting on Friday, January 9th.

Assignments and Deadlines:
Students completed their introduction to nutrition guidelines in class on Monday. If you were absent on the 9th, please use the PowerPoint in Google Classroom to complete the front side and turn in the completed worksheet.
On Monday, the Students watched a video on healthy eating, including how to read a food label, and completed notes in class. Participation credit given in the grade book.
On Friday, the 16th, the students will design a healthy restaurant, including a unique name that reflects the type of food, and will create six healthy meals that follow the Harvard MyPlate guidelines. If you are absent on Friday, I will place a copy of the documents in Google Classroom. Students will submit the assignment for a quiz grade.

After watching a video on food labels, the students will create a list of the ten best and worst foods for 11- to 12-year-olds. They will also design a poster highlighting the best or worst foods for promoting overall health. This project is due on the 23rd.

Monday, the 26th: Students will participate in an interactive food label activity to develop an understanding of the different categories on a food label. Friday, the 30th: Students will engage in a Food Label Escape Room activity in class (participation grade). Food Label Escape will be accessible through Google Classroom.
