Course Description
Course 2 is designed to prepare students for a successful entry into Pre-Algebra. Students will start with a review of decimals and integers with the expectation being that they already have a solid foundation in integers as well as solving simple one and two-step equations using integers, fractions, decimals and percents. Course 2 students are introduced to exponents and their use in factoring expressions. The concept of ratios, rates, proportions and percents will be back and taught at a greater depth than in Course 1. Students will spend two chapters working with the geometry topics of perimeter, circumference, area and volume as well as conversion in the metric system. Course 2 will end by expressing patterns and rules with equations, substituting for variables in expressions and solving more difficult two-step equations. We also learn how to graph those algebraic expressions. All topics are taught with a common-core emphasis encouraging students to understand the processes rather than memorize algorithms and formulas. As often as possible, students are expected to write and model with mathematics not just solve.
