Math - Algebra

Course Description

In Algebra I, students will use tables, graphs, rules and variables to describe and represent simple relationships. Students will explore linear relationships including direct variation and proportions, as well as absolute value, quadratic, exponential, square root and rational relationships and their corresponding graphs. An understanding of how to write equivalent forms of polynomial, radical and rational expressions is developed as well as how to solve these types of equations through the use of Algebraic Properties. The use of factoring to simplify expressions and solve equations is covered in-depth. Quadratic equations will be thoroughly discovered as well as the different methods for solving them including factoring, Completing the Square and the use of the Quadratic Formula. Students will be able to identify the x-intercepts, y-intercept and vertex of parabolas and accurately graph them. We will also review translations, reflections and scale changes so that they are all understood both algebraically and graphically and students can to modify the graph of the parent function to account for any changes in the equation. Successful completion of Algebra I should indicate that a student is ready for high school Geometry. A student's spring MAP score will be used as well as their performance in Algebra I to determine their best placement as they head into their freshman year of high school.
