You may be interested in this Elective if you enjoy: STEM in Year 7, working independently and problem solving or wish to pursue these subjects in the Senior Years: Year 10 Digital Solutions with Python and/or VCE Applied Computing, Systems Engineering, Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Physics.
Major Focus – Programming/ Digital Systems / Creating Digital Solutions
Year 9 STEM is structured on the idea of educating students in four specific areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Step into the exciting world of robotics and physical computing! This subject is all about building and programming robots and minicomputers (small, programmable microcontrollers) to solve real-world problems. You’ll use EV3 Lego Mindstorms and micro:bits, learning to code in Python and follow an engineering design process. You’ll explore how technology interacts with the world around us - through sensors, wireless communication, and algorithms.
This subject is hands-on, creative and future-focused. You’ll build real tech, solve meaningful problems, and develop skills that are in high demand - like coding, design thinking, and teamwork. Whether you’re into engineering, computing, or just love building things, this subject sets you up for success in senior years and beyond.
· Design and test algorithms to solve real-world challenges.
· Control inputs, processes and outputs using code.
· Investigate how sensors like LEDs, temperature and light sensors gather data.
· Understand how digital systems work and how to improve them.
· Collaborate using cloud tools and document your learning journey.
