Year 10 English (Code: ENGL10)

Learning Area Leader:  Ms Doran

Reading and Viewing, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Students complete a variety of activities designed to increase their skills in effective communication in Standard English.

Learning activities aim to engage students imaginatively and critically to expand their experiences and views of the world. Students study a range of texts, which may include a novel, short stories, a play, a film and various written and audio-visual persuasive texts. Students respond to these texts in a variety of written modes.

Students will consider the features and process of creative writing and put these techniques into action in creating their own texts.

Students analyse arguments and examine persuasive language in media texts, as well as perform a persuasive oral speech that explores current media issues.

Students must have the correct editions of the texts taught.

They are also expected to complete their own private reading regularly at home and consolidate this invaluable habit.

Year 10 Applied English (Code: ENGA10)

Learning Area Leader: Ms Doran

This subject is recommended for students who are planning to pursue the VCE Vocational Major pathway instead of the VCE.

This course is best suited to students who require or prefer a more practical approach to English and aims to consolidate students' skills in the following core areas:

·         Reading Comprehension

·         Critical thinking and analysis

·         Written expression

·         Communication skills
