Pathways in Mathematics
Students will choose a future pathway for Mathematics in Year 9.
This is a basic diagram which shows the possible subject progressions in mathematics from Years 9 – 12.
*Students should be aware that there is no guarantee that a swap of Mathematics streams is possible midyear.
Learning Area Leader: Mrs Thomson
Description
This study is designed for students who have found Mathematics in Year 8 particularly challenging. This pathway is designed to support students in building their mathematical skills at a comfortable pace and will lead to the study of Foundation Mathematics in VCE, focusing on fundamental skills and work-related mathematics. Students will be invited for this pathway based on teacher recommendation and with consultation with the Mathematics Learning Area Leader.
Topics covered include:
· Number skills
· Financial Mathematics
· Geometry
· Probability and Statistics
· Measurement
· Pythagoras Theorem
For this Mathematics selection all students must retain their Casio Scientific FX-8200AU Calculator from Years 7 and 8.

Description
This study is designed to provide access to real-life applications of mathematics and is the most commonly chosen Mathematics option in Year 9. It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in a technological society, and confidence in making effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques and processes.
This pathway has a general focus on preparing students for General Mathematics when in VCE; should a student be considering either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, it is strongly recommended that they select Year 9 Advanced Mathematics.
Topics covered include:
· Indices & Surds
· Scientific Notation & Significant Figures
· Financial Mathematics
· Linear Equations
· Measurement
· Linear Relations
· Statistics
· Algebraic Techniques
· Introduction to Quadratic Equations
· Pythagoras Theorem and Trigonometry
For this Mathematics selection all students must retain their Casio Scientific FX-8200AU Calculator from Years 7 and 8.
Year 9 Advanced Mathematics (Code MATA09)
Learning Area Leader: Mrs Thomson
Description
Year 9 Advanced Mathematics is an accelerated and rigorous program for students who have displayed a high achievement standard throughout Years 7 and 8. There is an expectation of a high level of combined student effort, positive learning disposition, collaboration and subsequent academic performance that will be required to be maintained throughout the year.
This pathway is designed to challenge and prepare students for higher level VCE Mathematics subjects Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. It is strongly recommended that any student considering these subjects undertake Year 9 Advanced Mathematics in preparation.
This program is recommended for students who meet the minimum achievement standards listed below.
· Above 80% average across Years 7 and 8 Mathematics
