Unit 1 - English (Code: ENGL11)
Description
The focus of this unit is the reading and exploring of a range of texts, particularly narrative texts, in order to comprehend, appreciate and analyse the ways in which texts are constructed and interpreted. In developing their writing skills, students will plan, draft and edit an original text that will be modelled on a selection of exemplars of the genre and style chosen. The focus will be on understanding language features and the mechanics and process of producing clear and cohesive writing.

This course is divided into two areas of study:
· Reading and exploring texts
· Crafting texts
Outcomes
There are two key outcomes for Unit 1, which correspond to the areas of study:
· Make personal connections with, and explore the vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas in, a text.
· Demonstrate an understanding of effective and cohesive writing through the crafting of texts designed for a specific context and audience to achieve a stated purpose; and describe individual decisions made during the writing processes.
Assessment
· One personal reflective response to the set texts
· A creative text
· A reflection on the process of writing

Unit 2 - English (Code: ENGL22)
Description
The focus of this unit is on reading and responding to an expanded range of text types including narrative, persuasive and audio/visual texts in order to analyse their purpose and the ways in which they are constructed and interpreted. Students will also develop their confidence and competence in creating written and oral texts.
Areas of study
The course is divided into two areas of study:
· Reading and exploring texts.
· Exploring argument.
Outcomes
There are two key outcomes for Unit 2, which correspond to the areas of study:
· Identify the ideas, concerns and tensions within a text and analyse the features used to create meaning.
· Identify and analyse how arguments and persuasive language are used in text/s that attempt to influence an audience and present a point of view.
Assessment
· Analytical response to the set texts.
· Analysis of the use of argument and persuasive language in text/s
· Persuasive oral presentation
· Semester Examination
Unit 3 – English (Code: ENGL33)
Description
In this unit students read and respond to texts analytically and creatively. They analyse arguments and the use of persuasive language in texts.
Areas of study
· Area of Study One: Reading and responding to texts
· Area of Study Two: Creating texts
Outcomes
There are two outcomes in Unit 3 which correspond to the areas of study:
· An analytical interpretation of a selected text.
· A set of creative texts, designed to respond to a specific context and audience to achieve a stated purpose; and an explanation of the decisions made through writing processes.
Assessment
· Analytical text response essay
· Creative text
· Written commentary on the decisions made during the creative writing process
Unit 4 – English (Code: ENGL44)
Description
In this unit students analyse the presentation of ideas, conflicts and concerns in texts. They create an oral presentation intended to position audiences about an issue currently debated in the media as well as an analysis of how other writers construct an argument.
Areas of Study
· Area of Study One: Reading and responding to texts
· Area of Study Two: Analysing Argument
Outcomes
· A detailed analytical response, which analyses the explicit and
· implied values, concerns and tensions of the texts and considers the structures and language features used to create meaning.
· An oral presentation of a sustained and reasoned point of view on an issue currently debated in the media as well as a written analysis of persuasive texts.
