Flagging & Traffic Control Program

The complete Traffic Control Program has been designed and implemented. The program consists of the following components:

  • Flagger Certification - The purpose of the Flagger Training Program is to provide certification to CDOT employees as well as external contractors, vendors, and partners. Flaggers are the first line of defense between the traveling public and individuals working in work zones; they provide safety to all involved parties.

  • Intro to Traffic Control (part of New Employee, CDOT 101 Training)

  • Traffic Control Technician (TCT) - This class is designed for TM I's, HEO III's, HEO IV'S, and similar positions in Maintenance; Construction Design Engineers; and those who work in and around Temporary Traffic Control. The TCT course is a prerequisite for Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS). The Traffic Control Technician is responsible for implementing the Traffic Control Plan and setting up traffic control devices.

  • Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) - The Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Course is designed for employees at the TM II level or higher who will be actively involved in designing and approving Traffic Control Plans; as well as managing, inspecting, and maintaining temporary traffic control. The TCS is responsible and accountable to all components of traffic control - from designing the Traffic Control Plan all the way to ensuring the work zone is properly set up. The TCS Endorsement is valid for 3 years, at which point all TCS's are required to renew their endorsement

Not sure whether you need to take TCT or TCS???

  • I am responsible for all aspects of Traffic Control, from design and approval of the plan to ensuring the work zone is set up properly. You need to take TCS.

  • I am responsible for all aspects of Traffic Control, from design and approval of the plan to ensuring the work zone is set up properly, but I have never taken TCS. You need to take TCT first, then progress to TCS.

  • TCT is designed as a prerequisite for TCS. If you have never taken TCS, you need to begin with TCT.

  • I took TCS in the past (because that was all that was offered) but I do not design and approve Traffic Control Plans on a regular basis. You need to take TCT.

  • I take the Traffic Control Plan designed and approved by someone else and simply set up the traffic control devices according to the plan. You need to take TCT.

  • I'm still not sure which class I need to take. You need to take TCT as a first step!
