With the COVID 19 situation hindering regular activities, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering in association with the Aero Modelling Club decided to organize and conduct a Four-week online hands-on session on Aeromodelling under the title “Art of Making Paper Airplanes” from 27th April to 23rd May 2020. Students had registered from various part of India, like Kerala, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir. The course was carefully planned with well-defined Course contents for all four weeks, which comprised of well-defined pre-session activities, topics of study, In-session activity, Live sessions, Assessments and post-session activity, keeping the participants well-informed and engaged throughout the duration of the course.
Every week, the making of a new paper plane model was taught through an animated video, accompanied by its relevant theory session. A pre activity and post activity was also assigned, which the students must complete in two days; and on all Wednesdays and Fridays, Live session with the course instructor was conducted to discuss the activity progress, completion and clear relevant doubts. An interactive Quiz was conducted after every week, to assess the learning outcomes of the students
A two day workshop on programming drones using C++ platform was organized by the Department of Aeronautical Engineering in association with the Aero Modelling Club, for the students from across the state on March 14, 2020. In this workshop, students from various institution had participated. The students were taught to program a mini on a C++ based platform. The concepts were taught to students by Mr. Amit Thool, CEO, WecanEducate, an education team from Dalvik APPs which is run by IIT Graduates. The students were taught to programme the drone for auto takeoff, altitude hold and chuck-to-arm feature. The students coded and tested their drones at aircraft hangar in our department. Finally, the team explained about the accessories that can be connected to the drone and programmed for various applications. The workshop has opened a new platform for the students to learn and implement programming and take their coding skills to next level.
An introductory Course on Aero Modelling for school students in and around Coimbatore was organized throughout the year. This course was primarily modelled for school children to teach them that science is a very interesting subject, if the basics are understood correctly. It was a one day program where students were taught the science behind the flight at first through few interactive, interesting sessions and they were made to make paper planes. These planes are tested and the feedback on the flight were given to the students. Then the students were made to make a glider out of plastic sheet and all the models were flight-tested.
This programme, Introduction to Aero Modeling is done completely free of cost to the school students with the only objective of making students understand the science behind flight. More than 250 students in and around Coimbatore have been benefitted from this program.
This program was recognized by National Child Labour Project center Director, Coimbatore. He had invited the team to do a similar workshop to the children at NCLP center. Our team had accepted the request and spent a whole day with the children explaining the concepts, making planes and shown some demos on fixed wing and rotary wing aircrafts. After our first visit to NCLP center, Vellalur, the Director has requested similar workshops throughout Coimbatore District.
