The Aeronautical Society of India’s design division organised a National Aerospace Conceptual Design Competition scheduled between August 2017 and August 2018. The theme of the competition was to develop the connectivity between Island territories through air. As island are considered, the plane must have the capabilities of taking off and land both in water and land. Currently there is no dedicated aircraft in this category in India. Some available small planes have been converted to amphibians for the same. More over the challenge is, the plane has to be transformed for different mission in very less time which should be economical. Here the plane has to be designed for carrying passengers and the same plane can be converted to carry out Air Sea rescue missions. The maximum persons for passenger mission would be 10. The plane can carry 4 stretchers along with 4 crew members when operating in Air Sea Rescue mission. Considering the geometry of the airport, the landing and take off distance has to be reduced as much as possible.
The Competition consisted of three major stages. Stage 1 was the submission of concept note, totally 19 colleges including IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun participated of which 13 teams were shortlisted for stage 2 which included IIT Kharagpur, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal and Jain University Bengaluru. The second stage was to submit a detailed report of work done s related to the theme for a period of two months. From the submitted report five teams were selected for final stage of presentation on the proposed concept at Aeronautical Society of India, Bengaluru on 25.08.2018. The teams are
• Team Abhimanyu from MVJ College of Engineering, Bengaluru
• Team Aeolus from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore
• Team Aero IITKGP from IIT Kharagpur
• Team Mach from IIAEIM, Jain University, Bengaluru
• Team Tarkshay from University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun
The forenoon session started with a seminar on Conceptual design by domain experts. The students were asked to present their work to the expert committee in the afternoon session. At this final presentation of our college team Aeolus was done before the Jury consisting of Dr. T. G. Pai, Professor, Manipal University, Prof. Sudhakar and Prof. R. K. Pant, Professor, IIT Bombay in which the team secured third position with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.00.
