Preferred Entry Requirements

GCSE grade B or higher in a related Design and Technology subject or BTEC level 2 at Merit or higher in a related subject area.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Level 3 in Graphic Design gives you the specialist knowledge and skills to become part of the expanding British creative industries.  You will practice a range of different industrial techniques in designing, prototyping and manufacture (including CAD/CAM).  This course is ideal if you enjoy Design and Technology or other art based subjects and you are looking for a pathway to higher level courses, with a range of potential future careers in product design, graphic design, 3D design, architecture, automotive design, interior design, multimedia and animation, plus many more.

COURSE CONTENT

You will work in sketchbooks and A3 flip folders using the design cycle to develop ideas to a professional standard.  You will explore/develop a range of presentation, illustration and graphic techniques to communicate and generate your final ideas.  Understanding a wide range of materials and processes is essential in today’s competitive and constantly evolving design industry.  As a future design practitioner you will need to have a broad understanding of design, technical and construction processes; being able to experiment with them to develop ideas for each design brief.  You will discover the history of different design movements, designers and styles to create new and exciting designs for the future.

ASSESSMENT

Over the 2 years 4 units will be studied.

2 Units are externally set and assessed and comprise of preparation time in class followed by an exam to reflect on their work undertaken. 1 external exam is during Year 12 and 1 during Year 13.

2 Units are internally set and assessed and develop design and practical skills resulting in a final made product 

Your progress will be continuously monitored, assessed and verified by your tutor.  You will keep a record of your achievement in a portfolio which, together with your final outcomes, will be verified by an examining board.
