Introducing June's Senior, Maya Smith!
Originally from the small town of Minden, Nevada, Maya is desk staff here at the Outdoor Program! She is a member of the cross country and track teams, is majoring in Environmental Science and Policy and minoring in Sociology and Anthropology.

Her favorite outdoor activities include trail running, backpacking, exploring waterfalls, having lake days, rock climbing, and "basically anything outdoors :)"

Maya was hired in the winter of 2021. "I joined because I needed a job and I went to the climbing center just about everyday. I wasn't sure what the OP actually did, but when staff at the time invited me to apply, I did!"

She's made a lot of memories...
"One of my favorite memories is from the spring of 2021, just after I was hired at the OP. Because of COVID, there were not a lot of trips going out, so staff decided to go out on a trip for ourselves! We camped at Emigrant Lake and climbed at the wall there. I remember being super shy around the older staff up until this point, when I got to really and truly get to know everyone and have a fun bonding weekend on the rock. Part of me wishes that I could have been more involved with OP trips in my time here, but my weekends were always busy with cross country and track and field."
And learned a life skill or two. "I feel like I've grown so much in my time at the OP! I think some life skills that I've really been able to practice at the OP are different leadership styles."

As for after graduation-

"I'm currently waiting to hear back from some summer jobs where I would get to do some wildlife biology work! I'm thinking that I will move to wherever I get a job, take a gap year, and apply for my Master's degree in something related to wildlife biology for next year."

Maya has inspired all of us with her hard and dedicated worth ethic, amazing spirit, and her hilarious humor!

Someone she's inspired by is "my professor, Dr. Karen Mager. I have had the pleasure of getting to know her over the past few years- she is my role model :)"
