Spring 2024 Faculty Technology Workshops

Get ready for Spring 2024! Learning Research & Technology is offering a series of faculty workshops between Jan. 16th and Jan. 24th to help you prepare for the upcoming semester. Sessions will be offered both in-person and online and will cover essential teaching topics including setting up your course in Moodle, academic technologies such as Perusall, Poll Everywhere, and Slack, opportunities for one-on-one consultations, and more.

Digital Pedagogy Consultations (Online or In-Person)

Schedule a 30-minute pedagogical consultation with a member of Learning, Research & Technology to answer quick questions, reflect on your teaching needs and discuss tools/technologies for your fall 2023 course. Please note that these consultations are brief, and therefore intended for last-minute or quick questions. If you are looking for support that requires more time, please submit a digital request and we can schedule a consultation with a longer duration.

Media Production Consultations (Online or In-Person)

Are you interested in having students create video or audio content for your course? Schedule a 30-minute pedagogical consultation with our educational media producers to answer quick questions, learn about the media production process, and consider tools/technologies for your spring 2024 course. If you are looking for support that requires more time, please submit a digital request and we can schedule a consultation with a longer duration.

1/16/2024 - Digital Tools for Student Engagement (Online Session)

Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2:00PM to 3:00PM, ONLINE

This session provides an overview of academic technologies that support active learning and student engagement. Perusall is an e-reader platform that allows students and faculty to collaboratively annotate articles and websites. Poll Everywhere is an audience response system for conducting polls to assess student understanding, elevate class discourse, and encourage participation. Slack is a group communication and collaboration platform for online discussions and sharing files. VoiceThread, a video sharing tool that lets faculty and students to record videos and add video, audio, or text comments.

1/17/2024 - Getting Started in Moodle (Online Session)

Wednesday, Jan. 17, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, ONLINE

Moodle is Smith's Learning Management System (LMS) and recommended for use as your course “home base,” a destination for sharing readings, resources, and other course materials with students. In this workshop, we will review Moodle's basic functions, including tools, options, and navigation of the Moodle interface. This course is recommended for new faculty or anyone who would like a Moodle refresher.

1/17/2024 - Moodle Assignments and Activities (Online Session)

Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, ONLINE

Moodle Assignments provide instructors with the ability to collect student work within one single activity and to provide feedback. In this workshop, we will review how to set up an assignment, how to use Moodle's grading functions, and how to download the files and upload them once they have been graded.

1/22/2024 - Accessible Course Materials (Online Session)

Monday, Jan. 22, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, ONLINE

Learn about accessibility resources, pedagogical best practices for accessibility (including how to make videos accessible), and what tools Smith has available. Facilitators will cover accessible instructional materials, principles that can be applied in various learning settings, and best practices for online course materials.

1/24/2024 - Introduction to Moodle Gradebook (Online Session)

Wednesday, Jan. 24, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, ONLINE

The Moodle gradebook is a great tool for tracking class progress, automatically calculating grades, and sharing grades with your students. This workshop will offer basic instructions for setting up the Moodle gradebook and recommended best practices. For more specific gradebook needs, an individual consultation is recommended.
