"My capstone was a group project with the other Honors nursing students. It is an IRB-approved study that is meant to see if telehealth can reduce the 30-day all-cause readmission rates for COPD patients. We also incorporated health literacy screenings to see if providing information at that patient's educational level made an impact on their readmission into the hospital. Our goal was to get 30 patients and call each of them twice weekly for 30 days with assessment questions and to ask if they had any questions about anything. We worked with respiratory therapists, physicians, our professor, and other healthcare professionals at SLUH to conduct this study. Due to health care providers being stretched thin due to Covid and a long process to get the study approved by the IRB, we were not able to recruit that many patients. The patients that have completed the study have shown positive results with no readmission into the hospital. The patient I conducted telehealth sessions with said that the study really helped her keep on top of her COPD. I often reminded her to refill her medications and I helped her find a Covid vaccine since that was a big worry for her being considered high-risk due to her COPD. We hope to continue to recruit more patients through the month of April."
