"I conducted a literature review about the health care disparities, particularly in mental health, among children in North Saint Louis by evaluating current programs in place and comparing these statistics to other inner-city networks throughout the U.S., identifying barriers to this access such as misunderstanding and funding, and determining some potential community solutions. I got the opportunity to tie in my health care ethics minor into this project as well by philosophizing on whose ethical responsibility it is to reinforce mental support for these children. I plan on ending my review with a reflection of my own experiences tutoring and working with students in nearby schools. I’ve been tutoring in North St. Louis elementary schools for my entire undergraduate career and my experience has opened my eyes to the mental and physical resilience that lies in these children as they, unfortunately, grow accustomed to the trauma and hardships that make up their everyday lives. I remember speaking to the principal of Ashland Elementary and how she once told me that not a single child leaves unscathed from these mental blows. Conducting this capstone project gave me amazing insight into what life in these neighborhoods is like and I am more passionate than ever to bringing these disparities to light and fixing them."
