"My project is influenced by the work that I do as a research assistant in Dr. Ryan Teague’s lab. Dr. Teague’s lab studies immunotherapy as a method of cancer treatment, specifically the regulation of the T cell tolerance mechanisms. Many scientists and healthcare professionals will agree that immunotherapy is the future of cancer treatment, and are hard at work to discover the ways in which it works, as well as how it can be programmed to treat patients. With these treatments being so novel, it is highly likely that once they become available to the public (hopefully someday soon), the average person will not understand the ways in which their planned course of treatment functions. I plan to create a brochure that simplifies the process and explains immunotherapeutic cancer treatment to a person who is not well-versed in immunology and molecular biology. In the brochure, I plan to briefly explain what immunotherapy itself is, provide a list of symptoms that may arise as a result of receiving treatment, and include a detailed meal plan that patients can follow. My hope is that this brochure can one day be found in an oncology clinic waiting room for patients to read."
