The rules for specifying the city and region of an artist's origin are given below, organized by region. (Less formally, "extra reading material for the ultra crazy/bored".)
Rules will be added as artists from the corresponding regions are added to music lists.
- All city and region names are given solely in the Latin alphabet (as a transliteration if required).
- English versions of city and region names are generally favored where reasonably available.
- Artists based in multiple regions will have a separate page for each region, as required, and will receive an additional comment after their description:
- "This is their [regional] music page. For songs produced in other languages/countries, please see their entry in the appropriate sections."
- Canada
- Every city is listed with the corresponding province or territory.
- United States
- Every city (except Washington) is listed with the corresponding state.
- The city of Washington is listed as "Washington, District of Columbia" to avoid confusion with the state of Washington.
- The unincorporated territory of Puerto Rico is listed as its own region in Latin America.
- Barbados
- Every city is listed with the corresponding parish.
- Brazil
- Every city (except Brasilia) is listed with the corresponding state.
- Colombia
- Every city (except Bogota) is listed with the corresponding department.
- Mexico
- Every city (except Mexico City) is listed with the corresponding state.
- Venezuela
- Every city (except Caracas) is listed with the corresponding state.
- Virgin Islands
- Every city is listed with the corresponding island.
- Austria
- Every city (except Vienna) is listed with the corresponding state.
- Belgium
- Every city (except Brussels) is listed with the corresponding province.
- Denmark

- "District" is defined to include Gagauzia and Transnistria.

- Every city (except Moscow and Saint Petersburg) is listed with the corresponding federal subject.
- Ukraine
- Every city (except Kiev) is listed with the corresponding oblast.
N.B. No section for music from China exists yet, but the Tibetan artist alan currently has a Japanese music page.
- Every city (except Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, and Tianjin) is listed with the corresponding province.
- "Province" is defined to include the autonomous (but not special administrative) regions.
- Every city (except Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Incheon, Sejong, Seoul, and Ulsan) is listed with the corresponding province.
- "Province" is used with the modern definition, as opposed to the traditional "eight provinces" definition encompassing the entire Korean peninsula.
- Every city (except Tokyo) is listed with the corresponding prefecture.
- If the special ward of Tokyo is known, it is listed and Tokyo is treated as a region rather than a city.
