Gaining Experience:
Characters get stronger as they experience the world around them. As they adventure, characters gain experience points. These points can be gained by fighting monsters, completing quests, using skills in needed situations, etc. Once a character obtains a certain number of points (below is the chart for level advancement to see values needed for each level), he or she gains a level. When a character gains a level they:
1) can choose a class in which to gain new skills (characters can choose multi-classes, i.e. 2nd level rogue/3rd level warrior = 5th level character)
2) increase their hit points
3) gain more skill points to use in their skills
4) gain new spells and spell casting ability
5) possible attribute gain
6) gain new feats
Training:
As your character progresses through the world, he or she will encounter many personalities, both benign and malignant. These encounters may give the characters contacts and possibly chances to train in arts both mundane and exotic. To keep track of those who are able to enhance your character's abilities with skills, spells, or other abilities, is truly the responsibility of your own ambitions. Some take payment in coin. Others require a quest fulfilled. Some may just take a humble, "thank you." In any case, take advantage of relationships you develop. Not all skills will always be available at a whim.
To see where you can train in Raden, please check the "Training" Section under the "Current Campaign" section.
Increasing Skills:
When you level, you get points to increase your skills. If the skill is one that doesn't need training, i.e. swimming, you may spend the points freely. If you do not possess a skill yet and it needs training to obtain, you need to find someone to teach you the skill first. Once you learn the first rank of the skill, you can train on your own. (Check the skills section for training needed or unneeded skills)
All skills except crafting, knowledge, profession and speak language skills do not require time to increase them. Crafting, knowledge, profession and speak language skills require at least 1 month training to increase them. At the end of the month, you need to make an ability check of the appropriate ability to see if you increase your skill level. If a player can find a mentor of higher skill to train them, they can add 1 point to their ability skill for every 2 ranks higher their mentor is. In the case of learning a new language, finding someone with the language already gives a +1 bonus to ability rolls.
Adding Feats:
Most feats will need to be taught by one who already possesses the knowledge. This takes one month per step of feat desired. Feats that are improvements of earlier feats do not need a trainer, but can be attained with practice of 1 month and an intelligence check. If failed check, it takes another month to make another attempt.
If there are no trainers available for the feat desired, one may attempt to train themselves. To train oneself, one must start one month at a time at a cost of 50gp per month for training materials, lodgings, etc. The first month, the character must make an intelligence check vs. half their intelligence score. If unsuccessful, the player may train another month and add 1 to half of his intelligence. This repeats until the character meets his intelligence score (the check cannot be higher) or learns the feat.
Spell Gain:
Mages:
Mages can learn new spells as they gain levels. Characters do not have to pay for new spells (ones they can pick when they gain a level) as they advance in levels, but must work on perfecting them before they can add them to their repertoire. They must spend 1 week per level of new spell gain preparing before they can use them. Mages (not including sorcerers) can gain spells between levels by copying scrolls or other spellbooks at the cost it takes to create them.
Druids/Priests/Paladins/Rangers:
Druids, priests, paladins, and rangers gain spells from their gods. They may be asked to perform certain duties by their gods before they are allowed to cast certain spells or spell levels. It is solely determinant upon the individual deities.
Bards:
Bards can learn new songs as they gain levels. Characters do not have to pay for new songss as they advance in levels, but must work on perfecting them before they can add them to their repertoire. They must spend 1 week per level of new song gain preparing before they can use them.
