In my preliminary research, I have learned the difference between the region Veneto, the Province of Venezia, and the Commune of Venice. In terms of census data, I have found an overwhelming amount of data on the Istat databases, which have collections of all kinds of Italian data, but only at the Province level. That is to say, the most specific population information I can find on the Commune (or municipality) of Venice is that there were 124,851 reported Males and 139,728 reported Females in 2015, summing to a total population of 264,579. This raises a question: where is the more detailed data? In other words, where is the information on the specific census tracts, or even the island specific data?
This lack of information is in a sense good for this team because it means that the project will be a useful reference later, but at this juncture it can be frustrating when trying to organize what is and isn't known about the islands. Once contact is made with the team's liaisons and collaborators, it will be more clear what data is already researched and organized and what still needs to be collected. But until then, I will keep digging and sorting through what information, in English, I can find.
