One type of islands in the Venice Lagoon is the Major Lagoon Islands. These islands are any land within the lagoon and outside the inner city that is still inhabited, and on average is above 20 hectares in size. Murano, Burano, Sant'Erasmo, Vignole, Mazzorbo, Torcello, Lido, and Pellestrina all fit this classification. Lido and Pellestrina are Lidi - long, narrow barrier islands that separate the Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea - but will be classified as Major Lagoon Islands for the purposes of this project.
