The Minor Lagoon Islands

There are 32 Minor Lagoon Islands that can be broken down into six more specific categories:

1. Batterie

2. Ottagoni

3. Ospedali

4. Convents & Monasteries

The batterie and ottagoni are both mostly abandoned and were originally used as military outposts to defend the city from both mainland Italy and the Adriatic Sea. The lazzaretti are also mostly abandoned but were used as quarantine hospitals during plague times. The lagoon also has several convents and monasteries some of which are still functional today.
