See my users.WPI page to interact with the map described in this post

As a follow up to my original post on overlaying GIS data on google maps using Google Fusion Tables, I've been working on creating a better example. Now that we have access to population data and better GIS map layers, I've created a choropleth map on the population of each Inner City island of Venice. This map, shown in the image below, can be interacted with at my WPI homepage.
Note that data is missing for the isle of San Zan Degolá. This is due to an error with the GIS map I'm using, and I currently haven't found a way to fix it
As you can plainly see, this map is a big improvement on the sample map of Murano that I produced earlier this term. I've been working on learning how to use the Google Maps Javascript API to create custom map styles, and it was with this tool that I was able to produce the custom colors shown in the map above. Although this element of customization is a major improvement from my original product, adding styling makes it so that I can only edit the map using its source code, rather than through Google's fusion table GUI. Thankfully, Google has produced a useful tool for styling custom maps, as shown in the image below. This tool allows one to experiment with map coloring before writing code, making the creation of custom maps much less of a guessing process.
