Venice Covers a total area of 516.53 hectares, and is divided into six Sestieri: Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, and Santa Croce. Each Sestierie has its own history, and each reports its own statistics. Cannaregio is the second largest by area and the largest by population. Castello is the largest by area, and was once an industrial shipyard. Dorsoduro includes the island of Giudecca, as well as some of the highest land areas in the city. San Marco is called the "Main Place of Venice," and was once the seat of the Venetian government. Santa Croce can be divided into two parts: medieval in the east, and land reclaimed from the lagoon in the west.
Each Sestiere also reports its own population, but I still haven't been able to find the correct data (all I can manage to find/translate is that Venice had a total population of 261,362 in 2011). Hopefully the data in the CK Console will have more detailed information on the census tracts, or even population by Sestiere.
